Aquatots Is a Water-Safety Education Provider

Not Just a Recreational Swim School

At Aquatots, our commitment to water safety extends beyond our pools. We have produced original research, the Swim Safety and Access Gap Index, to understand the complex factors that contribute to drowning risk in Australia. This research has been used in national water safety advocacy to drive meaningful change.

We believe that every child deserves access to high-quality water safety education. Our work is driven by a deep sense of responsibility to our community and a commitment to creating a drowning-free nation.

Learn About Our Research

We Prioritise Emotional Readiness Over Speed

Many swim schools focus on physical milestones and speed of progression. At Aquatots, we believe that confidence is the first safety skill. Children learn best when they feel calm, supported, and understood. Our programs are designed around emotional readiness and developmental pacing, ensuring your child is never rushed or pushed beyond their comfort level.

This approach is informed by over 20 years of hands-on experience, original drowning research, and a commitment to exceeding national benchmarks. We don’t just teach swimming—we build a foundation of confidence and respect for the water that lasts a lifetime.

A Clear Pathway to Confidence and Safety

Step 1: Gentle Assessment

We start with a gentle assessment to understand your child’s unique needs, comfort level, and developmental stage. This ensures they are placed in the right program with the right support.

Step 2: Consistent, Supportive Lessons

Your child will join a small group class with a consistent instructor who understands their pace. Lessons are structured, supportive, and integrate safety skills in a fun, engaging way.

Step 3: Transparent Progress Updates

You will receive regular, transparent updates on your child’s progress, with clear explanations of what they are learning and why it matters. We empower parents with knowledge, not just reports.

What to Expect

Before You Begin

Before booking, we invite all families to complete a 45-minute online information session. This ensures you understand our approach, philosophy, and policies before making any decisions

.

In the session, we explain what to expect from lessons, how we assess readiness, and how safety is embedded in every stage of learning. It’s designed to give you clarity and confidence.

There is no pressure to enrol after completing it. Taking time to decide is expected and respected. We want you to feel informed, comfortable, and completely confident in your choice.

Confidence Always Comes First.

Water confidence is the foundation of safety.

Before children learn distance or technique, they learn how to feel calm in the water - how to breathe, float, orient themselves, and move with control.

These foundational skills support safety in unexpected situations and give children the confidence to keep learning.

Our approach focuses on:

  • Calm breathing in the water

  • Gentle progression at each child’s pace

  • Repetition that helps skills become instinctive

  • Safety messages woven into every lesson

Choosing the Right Program Starts with the Right Assessment

Our instructors regularly review each child’s progress and adjust placement as their confidence grows. Progress looks different for every child - and that’s exactly how it should be.

Your Questions Answered

  • Why don’t you promise outcomes or timelines?

Every child develops at their own pace, and their emotional readiness is just as important as physical skill. We prioritise long-term confidence and safety over short-term milestones. Our instructors make situational, child-specific decisions based on what’s safest for your child—not what looks fastest.

  • How do I know if my child is progressing?

You’ll receive regular, transparent updates on your child’s progress. We track achievement against National Benchmarks and communicate clearly about what they’re learning and why it matters. Progress sometimes looks slow before it looks big, and that’s completely normal.

  • What if my child is nervous or hesitant?

It’s completely normal for children to be hesitant at first. This is part of building comfort in the water. Our instructors are trained to read your child’s cues and adapt the lesson to their needs. We never rush or force a child to do something they’re not ready for.

  • How is Aquatots different from other swim schools?

We prioritise emotional readiness and professional judgement over speed and milestones. Safety is embedded in every lesson, not isolated to “safety weeks.” Our instructors are trained beyond industry baseline, and we communicate transparently with parents every step of the way.

Babies

Infant Aquatic Program

Australia's first aquatic program for infants from 6 weeks of age, starting with  Aquabubbas. We build strong, healthy, happy babies using the benefits of an aquatic environment.

We are here to support parents and children alike throughout their journey, with an understanding that the first experience can be overwhelming for both. Our qualified, friendly team is here to help guide them.

Building the foundations of what will become swim strokes later in their journey. We're working hard on becoming safer in and around the aquatic environment by teaching life saving skills.

Pre-School

Children aged 3 to 5 years

The Aquatots preschool program is for kids with little or no water experience. It also helps those learning the technical skills for all four strokes. Children in the pre school program are placed in classes according to their swimming ability.

This is where you become part of the cheer squad on the sidelines, working together with our deck team to support your child while their instructor leads the class. Rest assured, we are trained to ensure that everyone feels safe in the water.

If your child isn’t quite ready to separate, we also offer a hybrid class for 3–5 year olds where the Sea Horse program is taught with a parent or guardian in the water. Every child is different, and it doesn’t matter which path your little one takes - as long as they are becoming safer in and around the water.

Advanced

The school aged advanced program is for children who can propel through the water using basic strokes and are ready to learn the technical side of all four strokes in preparation for Squads.

School Aged

Times have changed and many 8 year olds are unable to swim to save themselves.

At Aquatots we group children by ability, not age, but we are mindful about not embarrassing anyone.

Starting a learn to swim journey later in life can be hard for children if your child is starting in level 1 or 2.

We recommend 2 lessons per week until level 3 for a quicker progression to being safer in and around water.

Honest Timeline with 1 class per week for a Dolphin 1: 2-3 terms for a swim 5 metres unassisted, slower if fearful.

Advanced

The Aquatots Advanced program is for school-aged children who already move well in the water using intermediate to technical strokes.

Here, we refine technique across all four strokes, focusing on breathing, efficiency, and stamina.

Sharks is the final level of our learn to swim program. On graduation, we are confident that children can navigate emergency situations in and around aquatic environments.

If your child is interested in moving forward into squad-level swimming, the next step is Squad Prep, where we prepare them for progression into our Squad groups.
